The Compaq laptop computer several years ago, and if you type on your computer regularly, you probably find that the keyboard is no longer the same as it once was. Perhaps certain keys stick or fail to respond reliably, or some of the letters have worn off. You may even find that the space under the keys has become too dirty for cleaning to be practical. Replace your
Compaq laptop keyboard to make it feel like new again.
Shut the Compaq Laptop down, disconnect it from the wall outlet and bring the computer to a desk or workbench. Turn the computer battery side up. Push the release lever, and while holding it in place, lift the battery pack out of the Compaq Laptop.
Remove the two Phillips-head screws from inside the empty battery compartment, then turn the Compaq Laptop back over. Open the main hinge.
Use a thin, flat tool to pry the plastic bezel between the keyboard and screen away from the Compaq Laptop. If possible, use a plastic or wood tool that does not conduct electricity. The bezel has four notches on the bottom that you can use for leverage when prying. Set the bezel aside after separating it from the Compaq Laptop.
Unscrew the four Phillips-head screws revealed after removing the bezel from the computer. These screws hold the
Compaq Laptop keyboard.
Raise the keyboard out of the body of the Compaq Laptop until you can see the connector under it. Push the plastic locking tab on the connector forward until the keyboard cable comes out of the connector easily.
Bring the replacement keyboard close enough to the Compaq Laptop that the keyboard can reach the connector inside the computer. Push the cable into the connector, and holding the cable in place with a finger, push the locking tab back to its original position. Lower the
Compaq Laptop keyboard into place and replace the four Phillips-head screws.
Push the plastic bezel into its original position above the keyboard. After the bezel snaps in place, close the screen, turn the Compaq Laptop over and replace the two Phillips-head screws inside the battery compartment.
Replace the battery pack and plug the Compaq Laptop back into a wall outlet to resume using it.
