Laptop Battery?

I've got a laptop having a 9-cell Laptop Battery however I essentially use my computer like a desktop. I've separate keyboard, and mouse that we use. I've had my computer since August 20th, and haven't yet used battery. Can there be something I ought to do to be able to maintain my battery existence? My pal explained to empty it once per week and grow it support, and that i also have heard that departing my computer blocked during the night isn't good. Is true?
